The year is 2016. Earth's population is at a staggering 15 billion people. Mutants make up 40 percent of the world's population while the larger percentage of the populace is baseline human.
The enormous fear of most baseline humans was the idea of mutants mixing with their own kind. Not surprisingly to many, United States President Javier Ortega signs into law that allowed local authorities, with the help of technology advanced machines known as Sentinels, to search and capture all mutants living in the US and place them in quarantine camps. Once captured, mutants were then fitted with power inhibitor collars that neutralized their mutant powers.
Six years later a warring race known as the Advancers suddenly appeared battle ready in every major city across the globe. The Advancers, an alien race of genetically engineered beings created from stolen mutant X-genes and then subsequently incorporating those genes into their own alien DNA, gave them superhuman abilities along side their own mental capabilities. Their mission was clear. Travel to the past, capture mutants, and genetically alter the mutant X-gene in order to enhance their own superhuman abilities in the future.
These invaders were not blind to the fact the world's major cities would not give up without a fight. Strangely, superheroes found odd allies against the Advancers. A large proportion of the world's super villains aligned themselves with their bitter enemies in a common goal to send back the invading forces to the future. While the earth's superhero and super villain force combined totaled over two thousand, the Advancers numbered in the tens of thousands.
The Advancer War, as it was called, proved to be a tough one to win for the earth's super beings. Being outnumbered and out powered many of the them were killed within the first several months of the war. All was not lost however. Governments soon called upon their most feared mutant population, which they sent to camps six years earlier, to help defeat the invading force. Putting their bitter feelings aside, most of the world's mutants fought the Advancers with great valor and ferocity. But not all mutants fought along side other heroes. Some mutants hid or aligned themselves with the invaders in hopes to further the advancement of their own agenda of mutant superiority.
Within a few years the Advancers began to see a heavy decline in numbers. No reinforcements were to be sent from the future, the first acknowledgment of their defeat by their leaders in the future. To return to the future, defeated, was not possible either. They were essentially to live or die in the past as their punishment for their disgrace.
In the summer of 2025, the remaining Advancers, numbering now over five hundred, were bitterly driven underground or taken in by those mutants that aligned themselves with them. Humanoid in appearance the Advancers can easily blend in with the rest of the mutant population.
Three years have now passed since defeating the Advancers. The mutant population now makes up over half of the world's population at 60 percent with 40 percent baseline human. No longer hunted, mutants now live freely among the rest of humanity.
Xavier's Institute for the Gifted has been rebuilt and has been accepting applications. The mansion is 3 times the size of the former structure and holds over 600 live-in students. Xavier has established schools all over the world to handle the growing mutant population. Mutants remain free but under great scrutiny from world governments.
